According to Dr. Michael Ohl, from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, speaking at the 51st Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, privacy curtains harbor dangerous bacteria. As Dr. Ohl said, “. . . these (privacy curtains) are potentially important sites of contamination because they are frequently touched by patients and providers.”
Out of 43 privacy curtains tested, contamination was found on all but two at least once. This included MRSA and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE).
